"Plans are fragile things and life often dashes expectations to the ground."
"Plans are worthless, but planning is invaluable"
Planning ahead of time is extremely important in any form of combat. Whether you're fighting a war, a battle, or a single duel, predicting and planning is key to victory. However, more often than not, plans have many short comings. A set of perfectly choreographed movements can be easily defeated if the opponent doesn't follow with everything you anticipate. It is for this reason that it is necessary to plan, but always be prepared to face anything. You cannot fight a war and expect to win simply by creating a strict battle plan and sticking to it. Enemies can adapt, or make unpredicted moves, and you must be able to adapt in turn.
Likewise, a duel or team battle from a more practical standpoint cannot simply be fought by creating a plan and holding to it. One must come prepared with a bag of tricks to throw at the enemy and must always be ready to adapt rather than be conservative in their movements. If you become predictable, you will lose. You must always be ready, and keep your opponent guessing. You can't just have one set attack and repeat it, because if your opponent is any good, they will adapt and will not fall for that same thing time and time again. This is not to say that you should never have a plan in mind, or moves ready to use, but rather, do not view plans as concrete things. View them instead as guidelines, and you will have a much more effective plan than any that is set in stone.
